Fall 2024 trends: suede

Some seasons there's a trend you can't seem to escape, and for fall, it's suede. It's everywhere this year—especially accessories—and to be honest, I have mixed feelings about it. Suede is notoriously hard to keep clean—dirt tends to get stuck in the nap and getting it out requires a thorough, frequent brushing. Lighter colors especially get schmutzy quickly; there's a reason you never see white suede. That said, there's something rich and textural about suede that lends itself to fall. Traditional autumnal colors like chestnut brown—and all the shades of brown that are also incredibly popular at the moment—really look good in suede. And if properly cared for over time, it can develop a gorgeous patina. I wouldn't recommend going for something you plan to use every day, but if you're strategic about it, suede can be a really luxe addition to your wardrobe. Here's how I'm wearing it.

I almost went out and bought a new bag to shoot for this post, but after my No-Buy July, I'm really trying to be more conscious of what I'm buying. Plus, I realized that one of my favorite pairs of boots is, in fact, suede! Knee-high boots are a smart thing to buy in suede because you don't wear them very often—mine come out on select, somewhat dressy occasions between November and April, but not when it's raining—so they don't withstand the wear and tear that your everyday shoes do. Also, when it comes to suede footwear of any kind, the darker the color, the better. My boots are a super-versatile taupe, which works with a bunch of colors and tones, and happens to hide dirt pretty well. Because suede is softer than leather, it lends itself to a more slouchy style, like these; I love a pull-on boot and this pair is one of my all-time favorites. I'm wearing my usual size 39 and they're very comfy, however be aware that this style might be snug on larger calves.

Suede especially looks good in shades of brown, so here are more of my favorite options for fall, all under $200.

1. Soooo, I fondly wore their moccasins as a kid, and in recent years, Minnetonka has been rightfully accused of cultural appropriation. Since then, they've been working with indigenous designers, so I feel like now's a good time to practice cultural appreciation by wearing these very boho fringed boots.

2. It is incredibly challenging to find a suede jacket under $200, but Quince is your go-to. They've got biker jackets and trucker jackets, but this shirt jacket is my favorite. (It's mostly sold out at the moment but will be restocked, so get on the waitlist!)

3. Speaking of boho—which, btw, is making a huge comeback thanks to Chloe's new designer Chemena Kamali—this hat is so Sienna Miller circa 2006 and I'm here for it. I am also somewhat amazed at the price for this very cool-looking statement piece.

4. Suede skirts were all the rage when I was in 7th grade; I had a burgundy-colored one that I wore with some seriously cringe sweaters. Skirts are a smart thing to buy in suede because they tend not to get worn as frequently or as vigorously as, say, a pair of pants (although suede pants are definitely a look). The  forest green color here is refreshing.

5. A suede belt is a very low-commitment way to wear the trend; I have a low-slung suede hip belt that's at least 20 years old (boho is back, baby!) and still looks great. I really like the deep walnut color of this one too.

6. I really agonized about including a bag here; to be honest, a suede bag just seems like a bad idea. A suede top-handle bag really seems like a bad idea—thanks to the oils on your hands, the nap is going to be greasy in mere days—but I love the classic shape (The Row Margaux vibes!) and the price is right.
