An honest review of Vegamour GRO

I have always had very fine, thin hair, but in the last year or so, I've noticed in photos that it looks even thinner than ever. Thinning hair can happen for a number of reasons—illness, stress, diet, over-styling—but for many of us, it's a natural part of aging. Which doesn't make it any easier. There are a ton of products on the market to address this, with varying degrees of efficacy. The most proven ingredient for hair regrowth is minoxidil, which requires a doctor's prescription and comes with its own set of side effects. The question is, can you rely on more natural, plant-based methods to help address hair loss? Vegamour kindly sent me a package from their highly regarded GRO line to try, and the following are 100% my own unfiltered opinions. Here's my honest review of Vegamour GRO.

The products

GRO Hair Serum $64

This is Vegamour's hero product. It's a plant-based formula with turmeric, caffeine, biotin, and a bunch of other ingredients designed to stimulate the scalp and encourage hair growth. To use, you take a single dropper of serum, massage it into your scalp, then style as usual. For best results, you're supposed to use it daily, however I don't wash my hair every day, and I found that using it on dry second- or third-day hair makes things very greasy. So I've only been using it every 3 or 4 days, which might mean it will take even longer to see results—which, according to Vegamour, is at least 3 to 5 months when used daily. At $64 per bottle, that's definitely a commitment, but I figure it can't hurt.

GRO Revitalizing Shampoo & Conditioner $48 each

I am really picky about shampoo and conditioner; the wrong formula can turn my hair into a stringy, limp mess (or even worse, with frizz on top of that). I was surprised by how much I like this duo. My hair feels stronger since I've been using them, and it lays better—I've noticed fewer little hairs sticking out all over, which, to me, translates to less breakage. Two things to note: these have a STRONG fruity smell, and the lid of my shampoo tends to leak if it's not closed properly ( I am not a fan of the bottom-dispensing design). I don't think the shampoo and conditioner do anything to encourage growth, but they seem to be doing a great job repairing and preventing further damage to my hair. And as a bonus, they're color-safe.

GRO Scalp Detoxifying Serum $42

I struggle with any sort of hair treatment that requires you to walk around with a wet head for 30 minutes, so I appreciate that you apply this to dry hair 10 minutes before your shower, then rinse it out and go on with your regular washing routine. This is meant to help remove scalp buildup; I've found it really cuts down on itchiness. Again, this is not a product that's going to produce visible results, but it works nicely in tandem with the other products in the GRO line.

GRO Dry Shampoo $36

When it comes to dry shampoo, I have strong opinions, and I tend to be very brand loyal. This did not knock my favorite out of its top spot, however it's probably the most effective aerosol dry shampoo I've ever used. Aerosoles tend to deposit a bunch of gunk in your hair to add texture, when what I really need help with is absorbing oil at my roots. But since this is a formula geared toward fine hair, it manages to soak up the grease without making my hair sticky or dry. You do need to use quite a bit of product to get results, and like all the items in the GRO line, it has a strong fruit-candy smell.

GRO Biotin Gummies $36

I've taken biotin for years and can attest it helps strengthen your nails and hair, as well as make them grow faster. These are very cute and heart-shaped, and they taste good—I treat them as my dessert after lunch every day. They are reasonably priced for hair vitamins, however you can get the same amount of biotin (5,000mcg) for a lot less, and in actual vitamin form if you're concerned about your sugar intake—these have 2g of sugar per serving. (Side note: Why does everything have to be a gummy? Do that many people have trouble swallowing pills?)  Like the hair serum, this is the product most focused on encouraging visible hair growth, however they also take at least 3 months to produce results, so keep in mind the investment of time and resources.

Before and after 6 weeks of using the above products. Yes, I was wearing the same blouse on both days!

My honest review

You can't change the number of hair follicles you have, but you can stimulate them so your hair grows faster, and you can protect the hair you do have, so that it doesn't break or shed. This all takes time, however, and in our digital, post-industrial age, we tend to be impatient. I appreciate how upfront Vegamour is about how long their products take to work: generally 3–5 months, depending on your own hair growth cycles, among other factors. I've been using all of the above products exclusively for the last six weeks, and while it's too early to declare a miracle, I've definitely seen some encouraging results. My temples, which have been receding for years and which I usually cover with my bangs, have sprouted baby hairs to a degree I've not seen in ages. I've definitely been losing less hair in the shower. The hair that I do have feels stronger and smoother than it has in awhile. I am definitely going to stick with the serum—it can't hurt!—and would strongly consider repurchasing the shampooconditioner, and detox serum too. As for biotin vitamins, I'm going to go back to my affordable brand

These baby hairs were not here six weeks ago!

I was very interested in reading your post because I just received a bundle from Vegamour, too. Mine doesn't include the gummies, though. I think my hair may be thinner and finer than yours, but I'm encouraged by the things you say. Thanks for your extraordinarily honest review! I truly appreciate that.

Personally I loved the smell of these products. I'm not sure if they encouraged hair growth, but they did make my hair super soft. SO glad you saw some results!
