What to wear with a sweater tunic

This is the time of year when I start to feel really uninspired by my winter wardrobe and begin to yearn for the lightness of spring. It’s also when I’m tempted to buy new things, just because I’m starting to get sick of my sweaters and boots and coats. Of course, I resolved not to buy anything new in 2020 (and to be more conscious about the pre-owned things that I do buy), so I’ve had to challenge myself to wear what I already have in new ways. This outfit is the result of much experimentation. You’ve seen all of these pieces before, but definitely not put together in this way. This is a casual look for sure, but one that I was really happy with, and as much as I hate the term “shopping your closet,” it can yield some unexpectedly interesting combinations.

I love this camel coat, because it works with nearly everything I own. It looks great with dressier things , but it also works with super-casual looks like this one (and with faux-leather joggers). I mean, I’m wearing leggings here! I think the fact that it kind of feels like a bathrobe adds to the effect. Best part? It’s under $100 and really high quality for the price. This one is from several seasons ago, but Uniqlo keeps bringing it back (unfortunately it's nearly sold out for now).

The last time I was wearing this sweater, it was also with the same coat, but the overall look was a bit fancier (see?). I love a good tunic sweater, and I was excited to try this one with leggings—believe it or not, I usually dress this one up a bit. I think it worked out pretty well in this more casual context. This one is from Pinkyotto in NYC, which refreshingly doesn’t have an e-commerce site, but I’ve linked a similar option below.

These Cuddl Duds leggings are one of the comfiest pairs I own. They are a little more on the lightweight side, but they are so silky smooth, I often sleep in them, especially so I can hop out of bed and walk the dog. I am usually not a leggings-with boots person, but since so much of my outfit’s real estate is being taken up with the tunic sweater and boots, they’re really more of a supporting player anyway. These leggings run true to size!

I wear these boots all the time IRL—they are super comfy and the color is just unique enough. You last saw them with a turtleneck dress, which is usually how I wear them, so I was excited to try them in a more casual context. I think they work pretty well! I also took this opportunity to break out my Balenciaga bag—every time I carry it, I’m reminded of how much I love this bag. And ideally, that’s how you should feel about everything in your closet, right?

What a great resolution for the year! I get so caught up in the impulsivity of shopping that I often neglect what is already in my closet. Love the camel coat too, what a gorgeous piece!

This is so classic and gorgeous! That camel coat really adds a luxurious element to your casual look. I am not promising to stay out of the shops, but I am sure trying to not buy anything. My closet is so full and like you I am trying different styling combinations instead. Thanks so much for sharing on the Monday Runway!
