When I was in high school, there was a certain segment of the population that wore tie-dye. They also wore cargo shorts, peace necklaces, and Birkenstocks; they listened to the Grateful Dead; and yes, the stereotypes were all true. So of course I avoided wearing it like the plague…until years later when I saw this Proenza Schouler tee at Barneys. I love layering it under a blazer—it's an elevated take on tie-dye—and I've had it for years. So when I saw that tie-dye is a big trend for spring 2019, I jumped at a chance to style it here. This is more of a weekend look—I went with a long cardigan instead of a blazer—but still hopefully a more polished, ageless way to wear it. In other words, leave the Birkenstocks at home.
Proenza Schouler has been making tie-dye tees for years; it's become somewhat of a signature for the brand, and they come out with new colors and patterns every year. If you've never had the pleasure of wearing a PS tee, they are tissue-weight, ridiculously soft, and yet somehow incredibly durable—no pilling, no snags. This one is several years old, but I still wear it constantly, and I like the subtlety of the pattern. It's tie-dye, but no rainbows or elastic-band rings. For reference, I'm wearing a medium; I like to size up for a little extra room.
My beloved black skinny jeans finally met their end a few weeks ago (they were the pre-ripped kind and the holes slowly started to take over), and I'd been on a fruitless search for a new pair. On advice from Live Love Sara, I went into H&M a few weeks ago to try on their Shaping Skinny jeans. I couldn't get those over my hips, but I did discover the Super Skinny jeans, which are true-to-size, incredibly flattering, and, oh, only $19.99! The denim is thick enough to cover any lumps, but it's stretchy enough to be comfy too, and the recovery is so good, they don't bag out at all. I love them so much, I'm contemplating getting them in another color, like gray. H&M—who knew?!
If I were wearing this to work, I probably would have added a black blazer on top, but since it was the weekend, I threw on my beloved duster cardigan (last seen here), which is probably in need of a little de-pilling (don't zoom in!). A long cardigan always looks dramatic and unexpected, and this one has the benefit of billowing in the wind like Beyoncé's hair. It also provides thigh and butt coverage, which is never a bad thing.
Because the rest of my look was so casual, I brought out the big guns, accessory-wise: my Hermès bracelets, my beloved Balenciaga bag (seriously, every time I carry this bag, I forget how much I love it), and my 2019 birthday present to myself, these Gucci Brixton loafers. A little history: I had wanted the Princetown mules, but they are not made for people with high arches, and after sizing up twice to actually fit my foot inside, it looked like I was wearing clown shoes. Then I discovered the Brixton, which has a back that can fold down into a mule, bedouin slipper–style. The Brixton, unlike the Princetown, runs large, so I sized down to a 38 (I'm normally a 39 in European shoes, although my other pair of Gucci loafers is a 38.5). Long story short, the leather is buttery soft, the shoes are freaking comfortable, and I'm incredibly happy with my birthday gift.
San Francisco has a gazillion street murals, but we found these right across the street from one of our favorite restaurants, Marlowe, where we had our anniversary brunch a few weeks ago. They're a little busier than the usual backgrounds I tend to feature here, but I think they worked well, all things considered.

That's a great outfit. It's a great way to make tie-dye a little more sophisticated.
I love how you left the rest of the outfit darker and let that tie dye shine!
