TheFind guest post: Glorious Sandals Fit for the Gods

mattbernson
Try a pair of sandals that even a Aphrodite herself would adore. Matt Bernson's summer sandals will last the season and has the requisite handmade boho appeal, perfect for summer outings. Bernson's gladiator and slip on styles ooze with glamourous goodness that makes them desirable classics. Our faves from the collection include the winged "Talaria", the patent and gold "Flash" and "Love" styles. All are priced under $200 which makes them all the more lustworthy.

Not so much: Jeggings
Skinny pants were all over the fall 2009 runways, and I read a few weeks ago on Style.com's Style File blog that in the coming months, jeans are getting even skinnier. As someone who avoids salt the day before she wears skinny jeans (I am completely serious), I can tell you this is not really the greatest news. How much skinnier can skinny jeans get? Apparently, so skinny that they're not actually jeans anymore. Let's do the math: jeans + leggings = jeggings. That's right, jeggings. While you attempt to wrap your head around that one, let's take a look at Topshop, which offers jeggings in several different washes. There's the basic, the capri, or the acid denim, which surprisingly don't look as bad as they sound. However, the worst offender comes courtesy of Urban Outfitters, whose acid wash leggings actually look like a pair of acid-washed jeans from the 80s. It's not the acid wash that bothers me; it's the fact that not only are these leggings supposed to look like something they're not (jeans), they're supposed to look like a specific wash of something they're not (in other words, acid-washed jeans). What's next? Body paint jeans? Okay, on someone besides Lady Gaga? The only positive thing I can say about jeggings is that at least they're probably more comfortable than their conventional alternative, ridiculously tight skinny jeans, which, by the way, might cause nerve damage. I love skinny jeans, and I love leggings, but one must draw the line somewhere, and this is one hybrid that truly freaks me out. Thus, jeggings: not so much.
Buy It: Elizabeth and James shoes
I have mentioned before how much I like Elizabeth and James, the contemporary line designed by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen--everything is flattering, well-made and well-designed. If, like me, you can't get enough of E&J, the good news is that they've branched out into shoes. Like the clothes, the shoes are fashion-forward enough to be current but refined enough to not look fashion vicitim-y. In other words, you're going to fall in love with every pair at first sight, but unlike with your other footwear impulse buys, you're actually going to wear these shoes--they're stylish and practical.

My favorite style is the Belle gladiator sandal, which, yes, is pretty basic-looking at first, but there's a cool zipper detail in back, and there's a tiny wedge heel to give you just enough lift. And since they're metallic, you can easily wear them day or night--and I am all about double-duty shoes.

A showier version of the above are the Luella gladiator booties, which have a less practical 4-inch heel, but are miles sexier. Also, take a look at the stacked heel--it has a unique banded effect, and it's attention to detail such as these that really makes Elizabeth and James stand out.

Speaking of attention to detail, check out the buttons along the heel of the Jazz pumps. These are the type of shoes that people stop you on the street to ask about.

Also incredibly sexy: the Jasmine ankle-strap platforms. Pointy-toe platforms are not an easy shape to pull off, but this pair does it beautifully.

I also really like the Haley platform wedges, which, in spite of their height, look pretty comfortable. I would not recommend wearing these with skirts or dresses if you don't have stem-like legs, but the chunkiness would be perfect under flared or wide-leg pants.

Of course, not everything about these shoes can be perfect, which brings me to the prices, which tend to straddle the $300 mark. This puts Elizabeth and James in league with Pour la Victoire and Belle by Sigerson Morrison, two lines that I love but tend to buy only on sale. Considering they're a bit more refined and conservative, E&J might qualify as full-price-worthy for many, so I wonder if they'll even make it to sale. It's a gamble, but I'm willing to bet E&J shoes are worth the price.

Crystals seem to be adorning and inspiring all types of accessories this season. We love how the natural iridescent element adds sparkle and added dimension to faceted and crystal embellished handbags. Whether the handbag is embellished with actual crystals sewn onto exotic skins and leather or inlaid with faceted mother of pearl, crystal handbags reflect and sparkle in the sunlight. These unusual and eclectic crystal studded and faceted shape handbags (Roger Vivier) are a pretty summer accessory perfectly paired with white summer shift dresses and flat gold sandals.

Love 21: Was that really necessary?
Forever 21 has been in the news recently for its legal woes [subscription required], but in spite of getting sued left and right, they're expanding their business like crazy. They're set to open a huge Times Square location in the former Virgin Megastore, and lately they've been launching new lines like crazy. The first was Faith 21, a "plus size" line (I put "plus size" in quotes, because it only goes up to 2x, which still leaves out a significant portion of the plus-size market). Weird sizing aside, Faith 21 make sense--young plus-size customers are very limited in terms of fashionable clothes, so, hey, cheap and disposable mass-produced clothing for all!

I was a little puzzled, however, when I got an email about Love 21, Forever 21's new "contemporary" line. My first thought was that the line was going to be more expensive--in industry terms, "contemporary" refers to a price point and a customer, like that of Barneys Co-Op, Neiman Marcus Cusp, the 2nd floor at Bloomingdales, etc.--and, really, does anyone want to pay more for clothes from Forever 21? Thankfully, Love 21 does not appear to be more expensive than the rest of the store's offerings, and, at first glance, the clothes really don't appear that different either. But my guess is that Love 21 is aimed at a slightly older customer--the dresses are a bit longer, the cuts more forgiving and covered-up. Or, as the website says, "Love 21 offers a more sophisticated, modest fit than Forever 21." So if the average Forever 21 customer is, well, 21, add another 10 years for Love 21.

There are definitely some standout pieces. The lace detail at the shoulders of this knit top is really pretty, in a cool, downtowny kind of way. The linen side-swept skirt looks flattering, and $24.80 for linen is not too shabby. And I plan on stocking up on the very current-looking basic knit tank. Currently, Love 21 is only available online and at select stores; the only NY location is the 34th Street store. But, much like with Urban Outfitters, I find shopping Forever 21's website a far more pleasant experience than shopping in the store.

Is this all necessary? Probably not. But considering the wackiness of the Forever 21 sizing--I have some tops that are size small, and other times I can't even zip up a large--this is probably a good thing for those of us who love Forever 21 but probably shouldn't be wearing juniors sizes anymore. Hopefully the more generous cut of Love 21 will take the guesswork out of shopping there.
MasstigeWatch!
This one is a quickie! First of all, The Tracy Feith Go International collection is now live (it has been since Sunday) but, sadly, the leather jacket pictured here is already sold out, as are some of the other looks, like the mixed floral-print dress. Who would've thought Feith's quirky floral prints would've been such a big hit? I might order the white dress or the flower power bikini, but otherwise, I'm sitting this one out.

In other news, yesterday's WWD [subscription required] had some more info on the upcoming Gap Design Editions collection, which I reported on earlier this month. They've released the ads, which feature hot models Raquel Zimmerman, Anna Jagodzinska, Arlenis Sosa and Coco Rocha. Also, the abundance of hats has been explained: They're designed by Albertus Swanepoel, who is the CFDA Fashion Fund recipient for accessories. As stated before, Vena Cava and Alexander Wang are the other designers, and everything is khaki; prices run a very reasonable $39.50 to $88. Most importantly, the collection hits stores June 16th. Because I pretty much want everything pictured at left (especially that Vena Cava sheath!), I'm there.
The silver lining in the Henri Bendel cloud
In case you haven't heard, Henri Bendel will no longer sell clothes, starting this fall. This is sad for several reasons: For one, Bendel's was the hippest place to shop on 5th Avenue in the 70s; for another, they championed unknown designers with their open calls. The store will close its top floor; the remaining two will sell only gifts, beauty, and accessories, which, if you think about it, is not surprising: Limited Brands--which owns Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, and C.O. Bigelow--has owned Bendel's since 1986, and in recent years has sold all of its women's clothing businesses (The Limited, Express). Of course, the silver lining is that at some point, Bendel's will have to get rid of all its clothing, and the unsold merch will end up somewhere. And according to Madison Avenue Spy, that place is Gabay's in the East Village. They have a shipment arriving later this week. Consider yourself warned!
Cheryl Shops...Gilt Groupe sale at Samples for (eco)mpassion
I love Gilt Groupe and I love Samples for (eco)mpassion, so when I got invited to a preview of Gilt's warehouse sale (hosted at Samples for (eco)mpassion), I scurried on over. The sale is nowhere near as organized as Gilt's online sales--some digging is definitely in order--but I spotted quite a few gems. There are several racks of Malo and Valentino; lots of Gryson bags (prices top out at $200 for the big ones); quite a few Ali Ro and Lauren Moffatt dresses; some White + Warren sweaters; and a bunch of jeans that I think were Rich & Skinny, but can't quite say for sure. A little digging, however, unearthed several treasures: a great studded DVF dress, in size 8; a huge studded Be&D Garbo bag (it was $400, I believe); two Thakoon dresses, both in size 4; and several Marc by Marc Jacobs black leather flight bags (which were not listed on the price list, but I think I overheard the register guy say they were $130). Sadly, I walked out empty-handed (I'm saving myself for the 3.1 Phillip Lim sale tomorrow), but if any of the items I listed interest you, I suggest stopping by ASAP. Samples for (eco)mpassion is at 2 Great Jones St. (Broadway & Lafayette); the sale runs from noon-7 5/20-5/24. Guilty Pleasure: Aerosoles Zenacious sandals
Two summers ago, I wore an incredibly uncomfortable pair of platform shoes to work. By lunchtime, I decided I couldn't take it anymore, so I hobbled to the closest shoe store, which happened to be an Aerosoles. I was in so much pain, I would've settled for orthopedic granny oxfords, but I managed to find some braided black leather sandals with studs and a tiny wedge heel--on sale--and after the Platforms of Death, they felt like walking on marshmallows. Fast-forward a couple of months, and my Aerosoles ended up being one of my favorite pairs of shoes. People on the street told me how much they liked them; I took them to Europe and wore them all over Paris and Amsterdam. However, after two summers of heavy wear, they're starting to look a little grungy, and so I've been trying to limit their wear to occasions when I know I need my feet to be comfortable. But the other day I got an email from Aerosoles that featured...my shoes! They're back! They're called Zenacious; they also come in white and light and dark brown; and they're currently on sale for $51.75--worth every penny, if you ask me. I am totally going to get a new pair. Because as much as I love the look of my clunky, chunky platforms, it's shoes like these that I end up wearing everywhere. Sad, but true.
On the Blueprint Cleanse
On the advice of my dear acupuncturist JL, I tend to do a detox diet every spring to clean out my system and prepare my body for summer (and summer clothes). In the past, this has generally meant only whole grains, fruits and vegetables (with a little fish thrown in), but this year, having packed on an extra five pounds that just would not budge, I decided more extreme measures were in order. Enter Blueprint Cleanse, which is currently all the rage among fashion and media types. You can do it for anywhere from one to six days; testimonials boast of glowing skin, increased energy, and, yes, weight loss. The cleanse is raw, vegan, and gluten-free, and consists of six juices consumed throughout the day. There are three levels; being a fairly healthy eater, I chose three days of the second level, Foundation, but in retrospect, probably should've gone with the "easiest," the Renovation--but more on that later. If you live in NYC, you can have your cleanse delivered; I chose to pick mine up (there are multiple locations throughout the city).

I started last Thursday, and most likely due to the novelty of it all, the first day was a breeze. I started with hot water and lemon, then moved on to my first juice, a green juice. Then, throughout the day, I drank the rest of the juices: a pineapple/apple/mint (my favorite), another green juice, a "spicy lemonade" (my least favorite), another green juice, and, finally, the vanilla-cinnamon cashew milk, which, after all that green juice, tastes like manna from Heaven, also drinking lots of water and green tea in between. Thankfully, I didn't have any headaches--I drink coffee only on the weekends--and I managed to make it to my Core Fusion class on Thursday night. I was hungry at times but so full of liquid, it didn't bother me too much. Note: As you might imagine, consuming an all-liquid diet causes you to pee like crazy. Not only was I going every hour, but I felt like that scene in Austin Powers when he wakes up from the cryogenic freezing, if you know what I mean.

I woke up hungry on Friday, and that feeling pretty much stuck with me all day. I became totally obsessed with food; while on Thursday I experienced weird cravings (the strongest being for hummus and falafel), by Friday I was keeping a mental list of foods I would eat once I was done with the cleanse--everything from cheeseburgers to chicken parmesan. Whenever a coworker was eating food, I instantly got a craving for it, or I would start thinking about eating it. It's funny--I never thought I'd miss the physical act of chewing. I began berating myself for deciding to do the cleanse in the first place. By the time I got home from work, however, I was giddy, dissolving into fits of giggles at the least provocation. Friday night was also where I ran into one of my biggest temptations; I live with my boyfriend, MW, who wasn't doing the cleanse with me, and eating in front of me made him feel incredibly guilty (he ordered nasty, greasy Chinese food so as not to tempt me). Also, I hate to say it, but after a week at work, I totally look forward to coming home on Friday night (or going out with friends) and having a glass of wine (or two, or three). Not partaking in that ritual was incredibly hard; that cashew milk is tasty, but a cool glass of pinot gris it is not.

By Saturday--my third and final day--I felt like I had the flu: I was lightheaded, weak, completely out of it, and suffering from an upset stomach. In retrospect, these are obviously detox symptoms, but at the time, I was too miserable to notice. MW dragged me to brunch, and while I fully intended to sip green tea while he tore into his sandwich, I ended up caving and ordering a summer roll (which was not on Blueprint's list of sanctioned list of cheats, but I rationalized it, since it was all raw). I beat myself up a little, but since it caused me to not be hungry for the first time in three days, I let it slide. After walking around Brooklyn a bit, I came home and noticed something amazing: My face glowed like it had been artfully highlighted with Nars Copacabana, two pimples had miraculously disappeared, my forehead wrinkles had greatly diminished, and my hair even looked shiny. Perhaps this was the euphoric glow that everyone has been talking about? I was also thrilled to see my concave stomach and protuding hipbones (I know, I know, it's all water weight, but it still looks awesome). I went to sleep Saturday night after consuming my final cashew milk, with thoughts of food dancing in my head.

Of course, when you're done with the cleanse, it's not like you can go straight back to steak and martinis. Blueprint suggests starting out with fruit and watered-down juice on your first day of breaking the cleanse; I opted for a raw salad for brunch, and for a raw-vegetable lettuce wrap for dinner. Yesterday I ate all raw foods again, and today, desperate for protein, I finally had some quinoa for dinner. Tomorrow I might be adventurous and have some steamed fish. My cravings haven't gone away; to be honest, a cheeseburger still sounds pretty fantastic, but, strangely, I don't necessarily want one--at the moment, fruits and vegetables are what my body needs. I am also happy that I haven't had an alcoholic beverage in over a week, as this is probably a record for me.

If you had asked me on Saturday if I would do the Blueprint Cleanse again, my answer would've been an unequivocal no. But, much like how the mind makes the body forget the pain of childbirth, now I can't say I wouldn't do one again. Maybe not for three days--people who do the five- or six-day cleanses are insane, if you ask me--but one day would not be so bad. A nice bonus is that I've lost six pounds; as of this morning, I've gained a pound and a half back, but my stomach is still incredibly flat, and so far, I feel like my digestion has greatly improved. My hair and skin still look healthy. I have yet to experience the uptick in energy, but I expect it to come back as soon as I start eating a normal amount of protein again. I hope.

The Blueprint Cleanse is $75 for 1 day, or $65 per day for multiple-day cleanses. Learn more at Blueprintcleanse.com.
Object of Desire: Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag
Proenza Schouler has been in the news recently more because of Kiefer Sutherland's head-butting of co-designer Jack McCullough's nose, but the duo definitely deserve attention for their new line of handbags. Which, if you think about it, is kind of ironic, because unlike the flashy, logo-heavy designs of the past decade, Proenza Schouler's PS1 bags are understated, clean, and almost anonymous--which is key in these recessionary times, where flaunting one's luxury accessories is seriously declassé. The bags are, however, quite luxurious, with prices to match: a small leather clutch is $895, medium day bags are $1595, and large bags are $1995; python versions of these range from $1735 to $4250. All are gorgeous, of course, but if you want to really splurge, why not go for the $14,400 large PS1 croc bag? Yes, for that price you could get a Birkin, but the PS1 doesn't have a years-long waiting list, nor does it shout conspicuous consumption. With its crossbody strap, it's also much more youthful--a sought-after quality among the fashion flock. It bags may be dead--or perhaps hibernating--but if there's any bag that can rouse us from our deep sleep, I think it's the PS1.

I highly recommend checking out this inspiring story about Norma Kamali, written by the excellent Ruth LaFerla in today's Thursday Styles section. I've always wanted one of her sleeping-bag coats, and as much as I am loathe to shop at Wal-Mart, how awesome is this $18 (yes, $18) batwing cardigan from her NK line? While you're on the Times website, I also recommend Cintra Wilson's spot-on assessment of Zadig & Voltaire.

The Cut reports that one of my favorite websites, Ravinstyle.com, is shutting down as of May 31st. Founded way back in 2000, it survived the dot-com crash but, sadly, not the current economic crisis. Shop there now for the next few weeks, while you can.

Finally, I am doing a Blueprint Cleanse; today is my first day (and, yes, I am freaking hungry). I'll write about it here next week, but in the meantime, you can read all about in real time on my Twitter.
MasstigeWatch!
The big news this week is that Anna Sui will design a Designer Collaborations collection for Target [subscription required]! Even more awesome is the fact that the collection is inspired by Gossip Girl, specifically the four female leads. While Sui's namesake collection is more contemporary-priced than that of most of Target's designer collaborators (her dresses are downright affordable if you can find them on sale), this masstige outing will definitely let her reach a broader audience. No word on prices--and no pictures yet--but the line will hit a select 250 Target stores (and target.com) on September 13th, just in time for back to school (and, one would guess, the new season of Gossip Girl).

Speaking of Target, the Tracy Feith Go International collection hits stores next Sunday, May 17th!

Today, the Shipley & Halmos and Gilded Age collaborations hit Uniqlo, but, as Racked reports, well, no one really cared.

Finally, the summer portion of the Matthew Williamson for H&M collection hits most H&M stores next Thursday, May 14th. Unlike the previous portion, this less luxurious, more mainstream batch will be available in nearly every H&M store worldwide, and it also includes men's looks. You can preview the collection on the H&M website--it's indeed very summery, with caftans, swimsuits, and lots of great dresses, many with a peacock motif. It's very luxe-bohemian, which makes it perfect for summer. While Williamson is generally not quite my cup of tea, I have my eye on several pieces from this line. Hopefully it won't sell out as quickly as the last!
Buy It: Alexander McQueen skull ring
I recently started subscribing to the Alexander McQueen website's mailing list, and every time I open an email, I wonder what kind of extravagantly beautiful yet totally unaffordable gem it will contain. So when I got an email about his skull cocktail ring, I clicked through out of morbid curiosity (pun intended). I was expecting something north of $1,000, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the actual price: $330--definitely not cheap, of course, but a veritable bargain by McQueen's standards. As for the ring, it's definitely a statement-maker: oversized, with pearl eyes and Swarovski crystals at the mouth and the bee's wings. I'm also glad skulls aren't so trendy anymore (remember when they were plastered on everything from socks to bermuda shorts?)--thus the ring just looks badass, not fashion victim-y. This is definitely the type of accessory that could become a signature piece. Maybe it can become mine.

For the last two years, the Gap's Design Editions have been variations on the classic white shirt, but this year, designers are taking on one of its other old standbys: khaki. Racked has leaked photos, and while there are only two designers participating this year, those designers are Alexander Wang and Vena Cava, which are two of my favorites, which means I am incredibly excited about this collection. The obvious pick is the Wang motorcycle jacket, but my absolute favorite is the dress pictured at right, from Vena Cava (I'm assuming). There are no other details--like when it's hitting stores--available at the moment, but as soon as I hear anything, I'll post it right here.
Best & Worst Dressed at the Met 2009 Costume Institute Gala Ball
The thing about the Costume Institute ball is that, this being arguably the biggest fashion-industry event of the year (except for maybe the CFDA awards), there are always models there, and the models almost always look better than everyone else in attendance. (Of course, that's what they're paid to do.) This year's theme being "The Model as Muse," there were even more models there than usual, and, refreshingly, some of them made some rather questionable fashion choices, including several crotch-flashingly high dresses. (See, they don't look good in everything!) So, without further ado...

Best
Liv Tyler, Kate Hudson, and especially Kate Bosworth all look so lovely in Stella McCartney, I am not even commenting on what the designer herself is wearing. And that's saying something.

Ashley Olsen is truly the best advertisement for her own label, The Row. This dress makes me forget that I have boobs too big to pull something like this off.

Jessica Stam could make a garbage bag look hot (and she is paid accordingly), but year after year, she is one of the best-dressed people at this event. And now she's making me want to wear Rodarte.

The models love Rag & Bone, and from Maryna Linchuk's sexy colorblocked minidress to Lake Bell's even-sexier tuxedo, you can see why.

Of all the blast-from-the-past models that showed up at this event, I think I was most excited to see Cheryl Tiegs. Bonus: She looks freaking amazing.

Honorable Mention
I am definitely in the minority here, but I actually like Madonna's outfit, especially the to-die-for thigh-high leather boots. But, then again, if she hadn't worn the Donnie Darko rabbit ears, would we be talking about it as much?

As you all know, co-chair Kate Moss can do no wrong in my book. However, if I had to change one tiny thing about her outfit, it would be the turban. Was it really necessary?

I love Rachel Bilson's Bally dress; her Angelina Jolie hair, not so much. Thankfully, the dress wins.

Erin O'Connor's Gaultier dress is not for everyone, and, yes, she looks a bit Goth in it, but if anyone can lead the '90s minimalism revival, she can.

My first thought upon seeing Claudia Schiffer's Versace gown was, wtf? My second thought was, hmm. My third was, what a gorgeous dress--a thought that might've been influenced by the sheer smokin'-ness of the wearer.

Dishonorable Mention
I love Lara Stone, and I love Alexander Wang, but I do not love Lara Stone in this Alexander Wang dress, which is ill-fitting and slit up to the hoo-ha.

I actually think Agyness Deyn's Burberry dress is quite lovely, and I think it's awesome that she came with Twiggy, but, I'm sorry, I just cannot get past the hair and makeup--it's like the illegitimate child of Barbara Bush (sr.) and Edie Sedgwick.

Oh, Jessica Alba, why did you wear this lovely Jason Wu frock with black opaque tights and chunky black platform shoes--in May?

Anne Hathaway is wearing Marc Jacobs, a designer who readily admits he doesn't do red carpet well. This dress--which makes the otherwise skinny actress look incredibly hippy--is proof. Also, why the Jacqueline Susann hair?

Daria Werbowy is one of my favorite models (MW will bemusedly tell you how I drunkenly shouted "Look, it's Daria!" every time I saw one of her H&M billboards in the Prague subway last year), but, I'm sorry, her Balmain dress is just too damn short.

Worst
Leighton Meester's Vuitton dress wouldn't have been so bad if she had just worn it with bare legs, but, whew! Those Liberace-meets-gymnast leggings are just killing me.

Can someone tell me why Emmy Rossum keeps showing up at these things, especially when she's wearing snoozers like this Carolina Herrera, which looks about 25 years too old for her?

The nicest thing I can say about Jessica Biel's Versace dress is that at least she looks like an expensive French can-can dancer/kept woman.

I can't decide whether I'd like Helena Christensen's Zac Posen dress any better if the uber-cheesy sequined "Vogue" lettering weren't there. I'm going to go with a smidge, but not much.

Blake Lively is quoted in this month's Allure as saying that she feels like a tranny a lot of the time. With dresses like this, I can see why.

Coming tomorrow
Best & Worst dressed at the Met Costume Institute ball (a teaser: Madonna was wearing cat ears!) and a super-awesome MasstigeWatch! involving Vena Cava and...wait for it...Alexander Wang. And, oh yeah, the Gap. Check back tomorrow!
