The Cheryl Shops Holiday Shopping Guide: Your Dad
He's quite possibly the hardest person in the world to shop for.
For the golf-loving dad: Golf tees, check. Ball markers, check. Golf ball, check. Flask, check! This golf flask gift set has all that Dad needs for a morning on the course. Will a nip of Scotch help his swing? It's worth a try...
For the indoor dad: This six-in-one game features chess, checkers, backgammon, dominoes, cribbage, dice, and cards--enough to keep him busy on a rainy day.
For the dad who's master of his domain: If you're a Seinfeld fan, that probably conjured up some really nasty images. Anyway, Seinfeld has finally come out on DVD, and the limited-edition gift set features episodes from the first three seasons, plus other goodies like playing cards and salt-and-pepper shakers. Serenity now!
For pretty much any dad: I've had a pair of Gap pajamas since middle school (we're talking at least 14 years, here) and hopefully these Gap pajamas will last him half as long.
For the Dostoevsky-loving dad: Crate & Barrel's vodka set keeps his beverage of choice ice-cold and ready to sip.
For the film snob dad: More and more when I travel, I see guys with a portable DVD player. Get your dad one and he'll never have to watch a bad J.Lo movie again.
For the dad who can appreciate luxury: J.Crew is undergoing a bit of a makeover, and their cashmere sweaters are top notch: an ultrafine 12-gauge knit, made in Italy, and available in an array of colors.
For the dad who doesn't watch Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: Kyan would freak if he saw the Safeguard soap and Old Spice in Dad's medicine cabinet, so give him Kiehl's Ultimate Man Collection for a QE-style "make better."
For the dad who loves irony: When A Christmas Story is on TV, my dad, who has a rather dry sense of humor, cackles uncontrollably. So I have a feeling he would love this leg lamp, an exact replica of the one featured in the movie. I have a feeling, however, that, much like the mom in the movie, my mom wouldn't appreciate it so much.
For the dad who keeps meaning to take that European vacation: If he still hasn't gone on his wine-tasting trip through Tuscany, Wine.com's Viva Italia gift set will save him $5,000. And we all know that saving money is what Dad likes best.
The Cheryl Shops Holiday Shopping Guide: Your Mom
Come on, she carried you in her womb for nine months!
For the eternally dieting mom: Now, if your mom is a very sensitive person, this is not the gift to get her. But I think the Sharper Image's carb scale is the coolest thing I've seen in awhile, especially for the low-carb dieter. Plunk down your whole-wheat pasta and it'll tell you how many carbs you'll be consuming, perfect for holiday negotiating ("Well, if I have one pumpkin spice cookie, I'll eat steak and lettuce for the rest of the day!").
For the mom who's picky about her surroundings: Jo Malone's travel set features three of her best-selling candles that can help Mom recreate that comforting environment anywhere from Alaska to Antigua.
For the geneology-obsessed mom: Red Envelope's family tree will help her visually organize everything, and it's monogrammable for that family-heirloom touch.
For the practical yet indulgent mom: My mom likes the Isotoner gloves that you buy at Sears, but if yours is a bit classier, try these cashmere-lined leather gloves from Nordstrom.
For the lounging-loving mom: Don't tell her I said this, but sometimes on the weekends, my mom never gets dressed. (Hey, she's retired.) So for days like that, a pretty robe, like this one from Anthropologie, is in order.
For the mom who hates to cook: In the morning she chops some vegetables, then tosses them and some meat and maybe some broth into the All-Clad Slow-Cooker. When she gets home from work, voila! Stew!
For the mom who loves to cook: My mom's recipe book is a binder filled with recipes my grandma copied by hand, then stuffed in the side pockets are hundreds of recipes my mom cut out of magazines and newspapers. For organizational purposes, you can't beat Soleberry's recipe notebook from French artist 100drine.
For the mom who likes to think she's still hip: Vince's cashmere poncho is stylish, but the forgiving cut of the poncho is something Mom can handle.
For the proud mom: Get Mom a Alex Woo number necklace for the number of kids, grandchildren, or, if she's Angelina Jolie, lovers she has. Or get her favorite number (lucky seven?). Or get her the five and pretend it's Chanel! (In case anyone was wondering, five is my favorite number.)
For the mom who has everything: Cowgirl Creamery has several cheese-of-the-month clubs to choose from. Yeah, it's a little wacky, but I doubt she already belongs to one.

Random shopping notes
*Instead of going to the gym last night, I went to Loehmann's (yes, I know, shopping does not burn calories). They have a ton of Juicy Couture (at least 10 racks)--jeans, sweats, cashmere, T-shirts, even the clothes for little kids. They also have a lot of Joie, Chip & Pepper, Theory (now on the fourth floor), and La Perla. And I got some cute undies from Woo; they're so cute, I might go back and get another pair or two.
*I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Boston, but will return on Monday. In the meantime, I likely won't be posting. Don't forget, Friday is Shopping Day (or, if you're more of a pessimist, Black Friday), the official start of the holiday shopping season.
*Speaking of which, I'll be posting my holiday shopping guides, one for each day next week. As my postings might be a bit spotty in December (I start my new job on the 6th), think of it as my holiday gift to you.
*Happy Thanksgiving!

Website of the week
I was intrigued by one "Manolo," who left a comment here last week. I found that he writes Manolo's Shoe Blog, a blog that, as one would assume, is all about shoes--which is worthy in and of itself. The kicker is that "Manolo" writes in the Spanish-inflicted broken English of everyone's favorite shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, and the result is utterly hilarious. Manolo recommends and pans shoes with verve, but saves his zingers for insulting rival Karl Lagerfeld at every chance he can get. Nor are Hollywood starlets, political figures, or avant-garde designers safe from Manolo's acerbic wit. For shoe fanatics, this is a must-read.

WWD: Designers sound off on whether they'd work with H&M (check out this priceless bit: “I would do it,” Marc Jacobs said Friday. “To be completely blunt about it, I understand Karl was paid a great deal of money to do it and that would be a great incentive.”); Jimmy Choo sold; this spring, we'll be wearing exotic (read: tacky) bags; unisex People in Motion bags; and, because we all need another off-the-rack bridal store, Men's Wearhouse to venture into bridal.
NYT: We have entered the age of the ridiculously expensive haircut (for the record, I pay a reasonable $65); fashionistas bitch about now-popular colors purple and green; high-end cleaning products for high-end clothes; and J.Crew's denim personalization kit.
NYP: Duh journalism at its finest, don't wear five-inch heels when you're wasted this holiday season; how to not look fat at Thanksgiving; the Ugg influence; and if you haven't heard, leopard is in.
IHT: Suzy Menkes on handbags throughout history.
The Daily: More on the new lingerie department at Bendel's; and the most luxurious lap blanket ever.
Hintmag.com: Dior and more in Beauty Duty; and fashionable links.
Daily Candy: A new hip Nolita salon; and Pippin the store, not the musical.

Random shopping notes, part II
1) On my lunch hour, I walked by the Lucky Shops thing. While there were a lot of people milling around, there appeared to be no line to get in. I talked to two girls who had just come out, and they said that the deals inside weren't so great (they didn't buy anything), but that the gift bag kicked ass. They also said they got free tickets from that IN: NYC AmEx card and probably wouldn't have paid the full admission price. Yikes. But they told me, "Try to go for free and get a gift bag!" Yay for gift bags, I guess.
2) Lured back by an e-mail announcing a new shipment of Ben Sherman shirts, I went to Clothingline again, and was much more pleased with the selection this time. They have two racks of men's woven shirts, in a variety of sizes--I even saw some smalls! The shirts are kind of eh, but some are pretty cool.
3) And because I am totally nuts, I went back to the Fresh sale. This time, I breezed right in. All of the body washes and lotions are gone, as are the "index" perfumes they had, but there are still a ton of little soaps, and I got five bars of "baby milk" soap for $1 each (I figure if it's okay for a baby, it's okay for me). There's still a lot of makeup; I got a lip gloss, a lipstick, and a four-eyeshadow palette. The makeup may be discontinued, but the colors are surprisingly normal, and Fresh makes really high-quality stuff.
4) A special shout-out to my new employer, Macys.com. Yes, that's right, I finally got a new job. Yay!

While I was waiting in line for 90 minutes yesterday at Fresh, MK was waiting in line for 90 minutes at Steven Alan. Here's her report:
I just got back from the Steven Alan sale. I wish I had gotten up a
half hour earlier and not had so much work to do...last time I
remember getting there at exactly 8:30 and making it in right away.
This time I was there at 9:00 and got in at 10:30! They decided to
have no more than about 25 people in the showroom at any given time;
guess last time was deemed too insane. I spent a good 45 minutes
inside checking out the goods...the best stuff on the racks was
already taken, but there were still some treasures buried at the
bottom of the boxes. Brands I can remember are Mint, Indigo People,
Steven Alan, APC, (a lot of) Diana Lee, and cool Wrangler jeans in
human sizes. I bought ONE Diana Lee sweater for all my time and
effort...but I end up wearing stuff I buy from Steven Alan all the
time, so I guess it was worth it...
They decided to
have no more than about 25 people in the showroom at any given time;
guess last time was deemed too insane. I spent a good 45 minutes
inside checking out the goods...the best stuff on the racks was
already taken, but there were still some treasures buried at the
bottom of the boxes. Brands I can remember are Mint, Indigo People,

Random shopping notes
1) I decided to check out the sales at Barneys and Bloomie's last night. Barneys had some shoes, some Marc by Marc Jacobs, and some jeans on sale, but otherwise, not very much. Bloomie's sales racks were horrible-looking, so I didn't buy anything there either. I'd say wait till after Thanksgiving to hit both--Barneys has (in my opinion) some of the best markdowns come December.
2) On a whim, I tried on a pair of James jeans last night. Holy shit. Believe the hype! My legs are on the long side to begin with, but in these, I looked like a freaking model. The fit is totally different from Sevens and Citizens of Humanity, and they're a bit lower-waisted, but oh my god. As soon as I round up $140, I'm totally buying a pair.
3) The 59th Street H&M still has a lot of Karl Lagerfeld stuff (and from what I hear, so do most of the H&Ms in the city). It's on the 2nd floor.

Daily digest
WWD: I'm itching to go to Henri Bendel's new lingerie department; Sean John postpones its women's collection; Original Penguin is expanding; some denim news; I thought their store sucked big time last year, but Bluefly is opening another holiday store in Soho; speaking of Elle MacPherson, her lingerie line is coming to America in 2005; what teens want; and up-and-coming juniors designers.
NYDN: A preview of tomorrow's Lucky sale (plus, print out the article and get $15 off your admission price!); and tidbits.
WaPo: Holiday makeup.
LAT: Compared to my debacle today, L.A. sample sales sound totally civilized!
The Daily: Oscar de la Renta's son dabbles in high-end denim; the Daily "discovers" James jeans (a little slow on the uptake, guys!); pictures of rich ladies with Hermes bags; and polar-bear-esque Seven jeans.
Vogue UK: Karl Lagerfeld is pissed at H&M because they didn't manufacture enough clothes and he was not havin' the size 12s: "What I designed was fashion for slender and slim people," said the designer who famously lost 42 kilograms two years ago. Mmm-hmm. Yeah, I'm back to loving Marc Jacobs again.

America's Next Top Model recap
So, I thought last night's episode of America's Next Top Model sucked. It was the "acting episode," which I always think is stupid to begin with, because as Cindy Crawford, Rebecca Romijn, Elle MacPherson, and countless others have shown us, models can't act. So, anyway, the models learned how to "act" from some crazy old-school "acting" coach and Taye Diggs (UPN cross-promotion, obviously), then flew to Tokyo, where they had to film a commerical in Japanese with an non-English-speaking director and a bad translator (how Lost in Translation!). Ann managed to pull her shit together, but everyone else pretty much sucked. Their only other challenge was during the elimination, when they had to do another impromptu "commercial" for some stuff that obviously tasted like shit (thankfully the commercial was in English this time). There were no photo shoots, sadly. In the end, Nicole got the boot for not being memorable enough (both the "acting" coach and Tyra herself almost forgot to give Nicole her critiques--not a good sign). I wish they had kicked off Yaya, who has become soooo obnoxiously bitchy and superior (she spit out the food during her commercial), I can barely stand to watch her (people have hilariously taken to calling her "Yack Yack" on the Television Without Pity message boards). If Yaya's not the next to go, I'm going to be pissed. Still, I think Eva's going to win. Next week: More bitchiness!

Cheryl shops...the Fresh sale
I love Fresh. I wrote a story on the company when they were but a fledgling storefront in Boston, and I've been using their products ever since. Milk Milk is the only lotion in the world that doesn't irritate my eczema, everything smells amazing, and even the packaging is aesthetically pleasing. So I was totally psyched that they were having a sample sale...and so were hundreds of other women, apparently. I waited close to 90 minutes to actually get into the sale, in spite of warnings from the super that the wait was going to be over an hour and three pissed-off, empty-handed women who started telling everyone that it wasn't worth the wait. People seemed to be coming out of the sale with bags full of stuff, and I had been waiting so long already...When I finally got into the sale, I almost started crying. It was so crowded, I could barely move, but this was due mostly to the line of people waiting to pay, which snaked around the room (which was very small to begin with)--and the people were blocking most of the tables full of merchandise. As for the merchandise, they had a lot of everything and prices were very reasonable (most items were $2-$5, nothing was more than $10), but they only carried discontinued merchandise. No Milk line, no Sugar line, no Soy line. They did, however, have a lot of makeup, soap, shower gel and coordinating lotion, and accessories like soapdishes. Thinking a lot of the products would make good Christmas presents, I started to load up, then realized that if I were to actually pay for everything, I'd be there for at least another hour, making my now two-hour lunch a three-hour one. So in a fit of frustration, I left. My advice is to go either tomorrow or Saturday, avoid prime lunch hour, be prepared to wait, and don't expect to find your Milk & Rose Shampoo or your Sugar Body Scrub, 'cause it ain't there. Still...call me crazy, but I might actually go back tomorrow.

Cheryl shops...DSW and Filene's Basement
After a rather unfortunate incident involving Dean & Deluca and a boiling-hot chai, MW and I decided to check out the new Union Square DSW and Filene's Basement (well, except MW went to Virgin Megastore while I shopped) on Saturday afternoon. I had been rather excited about DSW, which came to Chicago when I was still in high school. And everyone else in the Tristate area was excited too, judging by the number of people there. I wonder if everyone else was as disappointed as I was. While they certainly have a lot of shoes in a lot of sizes, many were toe-up fugly, the prices were not so great ($5 off a pair of $100 shoes doesn't do it for me)...and then there was the "designer section," which, from what I can remember, the Chicago stores don't have. I'm guessing DSW felt that since this is New York, they need to appeal to those of us who like very expensive footwear, which is not a bad idea in itself. But what they failed to realize is that 1) we know a five-year-old Prada shoe when we see one and 2) we know that Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes don't cost $500 at retail, nor do Kate Spade shoes cost $350--the prices are regular retail prices with jacked-up "original prices." Shady, DSW. Shady.
I found Filene's far more enjoyable. Compared to their dungeon-like 6th Avenue store, the Union Square location, with its north-facing skyline views, is like a freakin' palace. The layout is much easier to navigate, with men's and accessories on the first floor of the store, women's clothing on the second, and housewares and shoes on the top floor. There are more clear divisions between departments and you can walk amongst the racks without knocking everything over with your purse. There's a section called "the vault", which I guess is Filene's version of Loehmann's "back room," and it had a lot of Missoni, See by Chloe, Moschino, Alberta Ferretti, and other Italian designers. I also spotted quite a few Diesel jeans in the contemporary section, and prices seemed quite reasonable. Everything is well-lighted, and while there were a lot of people there, it never seemed crowded. I didn't buy anything, but that was mainly due to my lack of funds at the time. I will defintiely incorporate this Filene's into my discount-store rounds.
In the same complex (formerly Bradlee's, where I once bought a cheap blanket because the air conditioning in my NYU dorm was sub-Arctic one summer), there's a Forever 21, which I didn't subject MW to, and there's a Whole Foods coming soon. Of course, this only adds to the already ridiculous amount of foot traffic on 14th Street, but as I looked around at the mix of people, listened to the kids beat-boxing, and smelled the nut vendors' roasted nuts (which never, by the way, taste as good as they smell), I realized it's still the downtown New York I fell in love with six years ago. It's just supersized now.

The Lucky Shops event
You all know how I feel about paying to go shopping. (Okay, if you don't, I think paying to go shopping is a big ol' load of bull.) Friday is the Lucky Shops event, which I'm sure you've heard about, and tickets are $35 if you bought them in advance before today, $45 at the door. Normally I would totally balk at that price, but here are several reasons why this looks promising:
1) Ticket proceeds benefit the Robin Hood Foundation, for fighting poverty and helping disadvantaged women.
2) You get a free goody bag, contents of which are listed in today's The Daily.
3) There are deals to be had, Like Botiker bags for $100 (were $535) and Foley and Corrinna tops for $50 (were $210). Other designers include Marc by Marc Jacobs, See by Chloe, Rebecca Taylor, Sigerson Morrison, Me&Ro, Jonathan Adler, and more. (A full list can be found here.) And everything is 20%-60% off.
I'm still on the fence as to whether I want to go, but if anyone does go, e-mail me and I'll post it here.

Website of the week
While the weather this week is going to be a bit more tolerable, last week's dip into the 40s reminded me that I need to stock up on tights. As much as I love department stores, their hosiery departments often suck (this is especially true at Barneys), and so I often end up shopping at places like Century 21, where the selection can be inconsistent. So I was happy to come across My Tights, a website devoted entirely to hosiery. You can shop by style, brand, or special feature (such as petite or bridal), or you can use the super-specialized Hosiery Finder for specific searching. They carry high-end brands like Gerbe and Spanx, but since this is a British site, they have a lot of European brands I've never heard of, like the super-expensive (but so sexy and luxurious-looking) Gio and the slightly loopy Le Bourget. Levante appears to be the site's top-selling brand, and they also feature Gwyneth's favorite Spanx Power Panties. I'll be ordering the Aristoc pointelle lace tights, Hudson's rustic rib tights, and I can't believe I've actually found them, Levante's wool rib tights, which will keep my legs soooo warm on winter days. (Seriously, you guys have no idea how long I've been looking for wool ribbed tights--they are nearly impossible to find in this country.) Shipping is $5.95, or free if you spend $50--amazing for an overseas website. My Tights is also very customer-friendly and offers a whole page of hosiery advice, including tips for men buying hosiery for themselves. Oh, those cheeky Brits...

And, a special shout-out to Michelle at SheFinds, who is now posting sample sale reviews by yours truly. Check out the website and be jealous of Michelle because she shops for a living.

Cheryl shops...the Ben Sherman/Evisu sample sale
In order to do some early Christmas shopping for MW, I hit Clothingline's Ben Sherman/Evisu sale on my lunch hour. There were about 15 people in line to check coats, and the sample sale was crowded, but it was tolerable. The first thing I noticed, however, was how many men were at the sale--I've never seen that many, except maybe at the Barneys Warehouse Sale. The second thing I noticed was that the men's section had been completely ransacked; apparently men waste no time. MW loves Ben Sherman shirts, so that's primarily what I was looking for, but they had...not very many. There were some short-sleeved shirts, but most of them were ugly (especially the pre-wrinkled ones--how '80s) and they only appeared to come in size large and x-large, which wouldn't fit MW, who's a size medium. (I find the abundance of larger sizes ironic, by the way, because 1) Ben Sherman shirts are cut very slim to begin with and men tend to like their clothing baggy, and 2) at women's sample sales, they always seem to have a ton of x-smalls, but never enough larges.) There were two long-sleeved styles left; one, white with black graffiti-type writing, looked like something Carson would wear on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and the other, a blue paisley/floral, looked very Simon Doonan--neither of which would work for the heterosexual MW. Otherwise, there were some random T-shirts and pants (again, mostly in large) and a lot of Ben Sherman shoes. I was a bit perturbed; last year, I got MW four kickass shirts, but I also arrived when the sale opened. Note to self: Go early.
As for the rest of the sale, there was a ton of Ben Sherman for women--some cute jackets, a lot of separates, coats, leather, everything you can think of, basically. The nice thing is that most of the B.S. separates are $29 or for for $100 (T-shirts are $10, heavy coats are $60), which is quite a deal. The Evisu section was a mess--jeans here, a T-shirt there--but they appeared to have a range of sizes and some really cool jeans (jeans and coats are $100, T-shirts are $45). There was also a lot of merchandise left over from previous sales, including a lot of Three Dots T-shirts for $15-$30; cords and jeans from Miss Sixty, Juicy, Blue Cult, and others for $30 (a lot of different sizes in these); and Free People separates for $15-$20. So, shopping for yourself: good. Shopping for your man: not so much.

WWD: I always say that when I have kids, I'm going to shop for them at Old Navy and Target, but knowing me, I'll probably buy them expensive stuff (god knows I was fond of Oililly when I was a wee one); the Japanese love Coach; denim news; and Italian footwear company Fornarina is introducing swimwear.
WaPo: Robin Givhan has an outsider's view of New York fashion parties; and how to stay warm and look good.
The Daily: Lancome's first U.S. store at the Mall at Short Hills; Vera Wang ready-to-wear at Bergdorf's; Marc Jacobs designed Bloomingdale's holiday bags and they're cheaper than his Stella tote; The Daily makes fun of country music singers with a very cheap shots; and yet another line of high-end denim.
Elle.com: A totally not-at-all-useful fur bag.

Cheryl shops...Karl Lagerfeld for H&M
Two words: Go now. I went to the 34th & 7th location before work this morning and it wasn't too bad, although I overheard a woman saying that fights broke out at the 5th Avenue store. Anyway, the clothes. Are. To die for. (Go here for a preview.) Most of the separates are $50: There are some ski-inspired sweaters, several chiffon tops, a tuxedo blouse, straight-leg jeans-style black trousers, straight-leg denim pants in black and indigo washes, camisole-and-tap-pants sets (they come in plain black and a peach-and-black photo-type print), 3 or 4 dresses ($99), a gorgeous pleated chiffon skirt, several jackets (I think they were $130-ish), and a coat or two (didn't price). Most items are black; some come in dusty pink or purple. Accessory-wise, there's a weird hat (the skull is knit and the brim is felted), a geometric cuff bracelet and matching ring, a nice unisex small messenger bag, leather gloves (very cool), sunglasses, a belt (for men), and, of course, eau de Karl, a unisex cologne that smelled slightly more masculine to me. The prices for all are a bit higher than what you'd normally pay at H&M, but the quality is at least ten times better--Lagerfeld definitely knows what he's doing. I bought the tuxedo shirt, which is seriously the best-made button-down shirt I've ever tried on (even better than my circa-1999 Gucci silk shirt), and there is not even a hint of gaping-boob, a problem I often suffer with button-downs. I also bought the black slipdress, which doesn't look like much on the hanger but is incredibly sexy and flattering; and I got the matching cuff-and-ring set. I tried on a short-sleeved black chiffon blouse that was gorgeously made but unfortunately made me look a bit top-heavy (not a good bet for the busty gals); I also tried on the chiffon skirt (in a way-too-small 6--yikes!), however they were already sold out of my size by the time I got there, and so I convinced myself that I didn't need it, because I already own three black pleated skirts anyway. (Although this one is different...hmm, maybe I'll go back later today to see if there are any more...) To add to the whole experience, H&M wraps your purchases in tissue paper and puts them in a big boutique-style shopping bag with "Karl Lagerfeld for H&M" on it. Sigh. Move over, Marc Jacobs--I'm in love.

...for my favorite store in the world, Barneys New York, which was sold yesterday for $400 million to Jones Apparel Group, maker of such esteemed brands as, um, Jones New York, Anne Klein, and Gloria Vanderbilt. Read (and weep) about it here.

Object of desire
For shoe lovers such as myself, there exists a Holy Grail, and that is the Manolo Blahnik Alligator Pump. I look at these and I get a bit teary, really. Made in Italy of American alligator (I met some up close and personal while in Louisiana in September, and all I could think was, "That one would make a damn nice pair of shoes"), and with a three-inch heel, these scream luxury (and for $2,800, they should). Excuse me for a moment, I have to dab my eyes...
There, that's better. Neiman Marcus also has a lovely Alligator halter that, at $1,950, is a bit more palatable. Well, not really. The good news is, however, that if you spend $600 on Manolo Blahnik shoes at Neiman Marcus, you get this cosmetics bag for free through 11/16. I guess even women who can afford $2,800 shoes like gift-with-purchase. Some things never change.

Buy it
Ever since I saw this sweater (inset) on Marc Jacobs' fall runway back in February, I've wanted it. Badly. In spite of its $2,000 price tag. Fast forward nine months or so. Flipping through the most recent Victoria's Secret catalogue--I usually pay little attention to the lingerie and clothes, but I love the shoes--I came across this sweater, a damn good knockoff if I do say so myself. I am not entirely fond of the orange bow (come on, why not black?), but for $48, I think I can work with it. From now on, I think I'll be paying more attention to the clothes.

America's Next Top Model recap
Due to sweatshop like conditions at my office, I wasn't able to post a recap for last week's America's Next Top Model. Basically, all you need to know is that Cassie got the (well-deserved) boot and a piece of Toccara obviously died inside, having to put up with bitchy NYC designers (um, hello Nanette Lepore!) and super-bitchy wardrobe stylists. By this week's episode, Toccara was phoning it in (she couldn't find an outfit at Century 21, her eyes were dead at her photo shoot, all of her bubbly, conquering-the-world personality was g-o-n-e). It was down to Ann and Toccara in the end, and Toccara inevitably got the boot. Let me tell you, people on the message boards are pissed. I liked Toccara--I think she had a lot of personality and she has a beautiful face, but it was unfair for the producers to have put her in the competition in the first place. There's no way she can compete with the other "standard" size 2 and 4 girls; it was simply not a level playing field, because, sadly, high fashion rarely comes in a size bigger than 12. That said, I hope some plus-size division signs her up quick, because Toccara could have a very successful career as a plus-size model.
As for the other girls, Eva finally showed that she's human by freaking out over posing with a tarantula (which, I feel like, in the real world, you'd have to know about before you take the friggin' job, but, hey, this is TV), but then she turned out what I thought was the best photo. I now have a feeling that Eva is going to win, although she does have her height working against her. Yaya is proving to be a bigger and bigger bitch; I hope to god she doesn't win, but I'd be surprised if she does anyway because of her skin (unless Cover Girl wants her to shill their concealer). Unless Ann learns how to pose consistently well, she's going to be out soon, and they've got to axe Amanda soon because she's just too damn old--25 is like 50 in model years. Norelle, my early favorite, needs to pull her shit together; she obviously doesn't have as much confidence as the other girls, and it shows. But they're going to Japan next week, and Norelle has the kind of kewpie-doll look that the Japanese will wet their pants over. And as for Nicole, I can't figure her out. She photographs incredibly, but in person, she's kind of blah. She could be the dark horse in the running...
Again, next week the girls head to Japan, but first they get some "acting" lessons and practice with Taye Diggs (UPN cross-promotion!).

Catch-up digest, take two
I was almost done with this the first time when my computer crashed. If we had OSX like normal people, perhaps that wouldn't happen so much. Anyway, here goes (again)...
WWD: The promising-sounding One Girl Who... line of sweaters; they may hate our "president", but Europeans still love American fashion; the new Calvin Klein store in Rome; people are buying down coats (shocking!); women are buying evening gowns off the rack at Oscar de la Renta's new store; and Gap is opening Love, an accessories store next to their flagship at 5th and 54th.
NYT: You're not going to find a Pauline Trigere dress on the rack at Housing Works because thrift stores are getting crafty; after a promising start, bridge lines from Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger tank; and what fashion owes to equestrians.
NYP: How to not look fat with the help of makeup; and screw the system and wear white now.
NYO: For the fantastically wealthy, super-upscale diamond store Lockes Diamantaires comes to the Time Warner Center (a.k.a. "the mall").
VV: Feeling depressed, Lynn Yaeger checks out the new Union Square Filene's Basement and DSW and finds little consolation.
WaPo: One of the best-written articles I've seen in awhile, this is a perfect example of why Robin Givhan rocks: Fashionistas declare the brooch dead. Delicious.
The Daily: A wearable-looking collection by Michael and Hushi for Patricia Field; Oprah's auctioning stuff off on eBay; a look inside Amanda Demme's closet; and loveable fashion faux pas.
Lookonline.com: Fashion goings-on.
Style.com: Editors' spring picks from lesser-known designers; Sarah Brown picks the best spring beauty trends from the runway; new beauty products; a semi-cute, semi-ugly bag; and Candy Pratts Price on essential fashion books.
Elle.com: To match your cute but slightly overpriced shoes, Hollywould dresses; awesome semiprecious bling; and if you're already sick of winter, you can look forward to resort wear!
Daily Candy: Handbags fit for a queen; groovy-sounding facials at the LES's Pharma; and the Yellow Door comes to Manhattan.

Not so much
God willing, I will have more than 5 minutes tomorrow to eat my lunch and post some stuff. Please keep checking back, and I promise I will go crazy with the posts next week and the week thereafter. In the meantime, working 14-hour days and making waaaay less than our retoucher (who reportedly makes $200 an hour), my job: Not so much.

The (mid-) week in shopping
My apologies for being a bit behind this week. Between this wedding last weekend, the election, and it being my busy week at work, I haven't been quite on top of things. But there's nothing like a devastating blow to the Democratic party to get me thinking about shopping! Um, not really, but I'm trying to focus on positive things. Like America's Next Top Model is on tonight...and I have a kickass new coat from Vintage Cool Things...and my total lack of appetite means that at least I'll lose a few pounds! Sorry to be Debbie Downer, kids (wah wah wah). On that note, on to the sales...
